Iceland: Reykjavik & Borgarnes

We took the morning flight over from London Luton and took around 3 hours to reach Reykjavik. Once we touched down, got our luggages, bought some SIM cards & we head over to Hertz to get our rented car.

We don’t really have a plan for the day, as we worried there might be delays at the airport or the rental place – but surprisingly everything went smoothly! Hence we drove all the way to our accommodation at Borgarnes.

Here are some places we managed to pass by while on the way to up north to Borgarnes.

Blue Lagoon

Every one who visit Iceland would definitely get a dip at the Blue Lagoon, however we chose another hot spring which is known to be ‘natural’ as Blue Lagoon (geothermal spa) is a man-made lagoon and its pool water is is generated by a geothermal power station. What makes its famous would be its blue coloured sulphur water. Anyhow, we just passed by and happen to took some picture of the ‘blue’ lagoon. It is much recommended to pre-book your slot online as it is filled with tourist buses.

Krýsuvík (Seltún)

Another geothermal area here called Krýsuvík – is formed by solfatarsm fumaroles (smokes), mud pots and hot springs. Once we got down the car, we could smell the sulphur already. There’s a proper path for us to walk forward, so we just cross the bridge to see some bubbling mud pots then we left.

Kleifarvatn

As we were driving we passed by this lake twice, cause it’s so huge that we can’t ignore it anymore. We decided to stop there. The view is beyond imagination, you can see where the lake ends. It is known as the largest lake on the Reykjanes Penisula in Iceland. After doing some background check, it says the lake began to diminish after the 2000 Iceland earthquakes, thus 20% of its surface has disappeared.

Facing the lake, is surrounded by mountains where the soils are black, presumably volcanic soils.

Along the road, there’s not much cars, not really sure why, but thanks to that we got to get down the car several times to take photographs!

it’s rare to see cars passing by all the time, so one can actually take many photo like these yay

Grundarfjörður

The next day, we continue heading North. We stopped by the town, at the north of  Snæfellnes peninsula in the west of Iceland, as its been a long drive over and the weather was pretty bad, snow storming, thus we can’t actually see where the road is bringing us.

Kirkjufells & Kirkjufellsfoss

As we were driving, we can already see the mountain from afar. We stopped right opposite it (there’s a proper place for us to make a stop there!), but the weather was pretty bad so we stayed in the car first, until the sky looks clearer only we get down the car. As it’s very cloudy and we can’t see the peak of the mountain clearly, so we decided to hike up the waterfall opposite first – Kirkjufellsfoss. I almost slipped while climbing up the waterfall, cause it’s snowing so badly (which you can see from the photo). After taking some photos we just went back down cause the wind is strong and the snow is getting heavier too. By the time we got down, the sky is partially cleared & we finally get to see the peak of Kirkjufells!

Kirkjufells, also known as the Church mountain, is a distinctly shaped peak located at the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellnes Penisula. The mountain changes colour every season which makes it special & becoming ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’! Whereas Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, also is known as the Church Mountain Falls, channels glacier water of  the Snæfellsjokull glacier, and is located at the base of Kirkjufells peak.

on my way up the waterfall

As it’s winter time, the sun rises at 10am and dawn by 4pm every day, so we couldn’t visit too many places in a day as it gets dark too soon. After this we just went back to our guesthouse to rest.

Happened to pass by these cuties while on the way back to rest!
